Lecture Theme:

Endodontic therapy of primary teeth

Abstract

Pediatric dentistry covers whole dentistry in children mouth from birth until the age of eighteen. Needless to say that the early age represents the most difficult patients to treat. Fear of unknown is present the most and parent cooperation is necessary. Childs adjustment should start as soon as first teeth erupt and parents should receive at least some instruction of oral hygiene and eating habits even before that. These days it is easier to show and teach children what happens at dental offices thanks to cartoons, books and leaflets. YouTube and internet influence in these cases is a most welcome help.

Behavioral approach is mandatory regardless of the patient’s age. First contact with dental team should be pleasant and if possible without painful interventions. The main part of the first appointment should be show and tell as well as preventive measures recommendation.

Nevertheless, children usually come to dental practice in pain, swelling when it is not possible to treat the patient according to the precept of pediatric dentistry. Sedation helps in these cases and is a treatment of choice. Light per oral or inhalation sedation may help the child especially if they are not able to comprehend the need for dental intervention. The procedure must be explained to parents in detail and safety measures should be undertaken.

Pain control is an important part of dental treatment in pediatric dentistry. Contemporary anesthetics as well as needless injection systems represent a must have in dental offices where children are treated. Topical anesthetic should be in a form of a gel and with a pleasant smell.
